Parish Notes - January 11, 2018
January 15th is the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.  The Episcopal Church commemorates him either on January 15th or April 4th.  Even as a child, I was very interested in Rev. King because of his leadership in the Civil Rights movement, his courage, his nonviolent approach, and his obvious love for all.  As a follower of Christ, he felt called by Jesus to work for justice for all.
This Sunday and next, the Gospel lessons are about Jesus calling his disciples to follow him.  How are you answering Jesus' call to you?  How are you living your life as his disciple?
Is there anything you feel called to do or say to work for justice for all?  Is there anything you feel called to do or say in order to show love for all? Pondering these questions might bring some clarity and energy to your discipleship.
Peace, Nancy

Theology Under Wraps continues this Sunday 12:30-2pm
From the 2017 Annual Report (coming out soon) - Early in 2017, we realized that the youth group was quickly dwindling in numbers and enthusiasm.  The model of bringing in someone to lead our youth group from outside of St. Matthew's community was not as successful as we hoped it would be.  Our youth are increasingly more busy and scheduled and the old way of doing things was not going to work.  In May, after canceling the youth retreat due to lack of interest a new idea formed.  Celeste had heard of a group called Theology On Tap, geared toward college age kids.  This idea was adapted for St. Matthew's and became Theology Under Wraps for our high school youth. They have met one Sunday a month at Nadeau's Subs & Wraps to sit with Celeste and Shea Sennett to discuss various topics of Theology.  It has been successful and well received by the 4-6 youths that attend regularly.  This will continue at a new time with The Rev. Nancy Vogele.

Annual Meeting - January 21
All are invited and encouraged to attend St. Matthew's Annual Meeting. The Annual Report will be available online prior to the meeting. Hard copies, along with the financial reports will be available at the meeting. We'll give thanks to many and discuss the highlights of 2017.
Pot luck lunch provided. See the sign up sheet in the undercroft to help with food.

Book Group - January 25, 7pm
We will be reading Following Jesus in a Culture of Fear by Scott Bader-Saye. Please rsvp to if you plan to attend. Even if you haven't read the book, but would like to learn more, please send Linnae an email and let her know you're coming.

From Amazon website:  Through politics, marketing, news programming, and popular culture we are taught to fear, often in ways that profit others. But what does all this fear do to our moral lives as it forms (or deforms) our character and our judgment? Drawing on Christian scripture and tradition, Following Jesus in a Culture of Fear articulates a response to fear that resists an ethic of security in favor of fostering an ethic of risk. The Christian virtues of hospitality, peacefulness, and generosity are presented as the way to defeat the countervirtues of suspicion, preemption, and control. Pastors, students, and lay people will find this unique book both accessible and intriguing.

The parish administrator would like to thank these people - Randy Cheyne, Eric Battey, Rick Simons & Angie Battey, in addition to unknown others for shoveling the walks to the office. I've arrived several times this past month with my snow boots and heavy mittens prepared to shovel my way into the office, only to find a clear path! I'm so very grateful. There is still a need for several more volunteers (see below). Please consider it helpful exercising!
Intrepid Snow Shovelers Needed!
Believe it or not, Winter is here!
During winter weather events, our driveway and parkingareas are cleared by our contracted snow plow operator.
The remaining snow removal chores need to be performed after each storm  with occasional touch-up before scheduled building use.
These chores include:
  • Clear walkways, ramps  and entry ways
  • Clear Emergency exits
  • Apply Ice-melt on stairs and ramps to avoid slippery surfaces
There is a snow-blower available for the larger storms.
We would like to establish a revolving list for these chores.
With the expected snowfall this coming week, it is our hope that a list can be setup so that the chores do not become burdensome.  Also, our hope is the list would provide a backup in case the current person was unavailable during a storm.
If you are interested in helping out, please get in touch with Eric Battey, Vestry for Buildings & Grounds ( or send a message to the Parish Office.
