Interim Rector's Notes - August 24, 2017

In the Gospel lesson for this Sunday Jesus asks his disciples what people are saying about who he is. And then he asks them, "But who do YOU say I am?"  He's asking us that question too. And with great urgency right now.  Who is Jesus for you? How do you proclaim that in the world?  Come and let us wrestle with those questions together.

"See you in church!"

Sunday School News
Starting this fall, Sunday School will be using a new and exciting curriculum called SparkHouse Classroom for 3 yr - 5th grade.

The Young Teens class (6th - 9th grade) will be focusing on the church's mission and what it means to them. Both kids and teachers are going to like it! If you would like to find out about being a teacher, come to the teachers meeting Sep 10 at 11:30am. Sunday School lessons start Sep 17 for 3 yr - 9th grade.

Another important way to support the Sunday School ministry is to donate materials we will need. Starting Sun 8/27, there will be a labeled bin in the Undercroft to collect the following supplies: newspaper, egg cartons, paint shirts (old button down shirts), thin cardboard like cereal boxes or sheets used in packing, animal/plant shaped cookie cutters (used fine/won't be used for making food), ribbons, string, and twine.  We won't just be using paper and markers this year!

Sunday School Greeter Opportunity

The Sunday School team is in need of a few more Sunday School greeters. Here's what's involved:

Safe Church training is helpful, but optional.
Arrive in the Parish House by 9:45 am
Greet teachers, introduce yourself and let them know you are available if they need you
Greet parents and children. Sign in their child(ren) by class on the clipboards in the Easter Room.
Once classes are started (after music, etc.) float around to check to see if teachers need anything - and/or jump in a class and help out if one is a little restless etc.
Count the kids and teachers & yourself so you can give the count to the Usher when s/he comes over.
Join the teachers and children when it' time to come into the church at Communion time.

Thank you for giving thought to helping as a Greeter. It is an important and rewarding role! Please let Joan Alayne know if you'd like more information or can help out.

CCC Volunteer Openings

Calling All Bookworms
The Community Clothing Center (CCC) is seeking a book lover to take on the role of sorting donated books. We give books that are in good condition to the Library and keep some for the CCC bookshelves. Books that are in less pristine condition go to the Transfer Station to be recycled. Videotapes are also received and put into service. An hour a week is all that would be needed.
The CCC is looking for two volunteers on Pumpkinfest Saturday, Oct 14th to help from 9-1 pm. No experience necessary. Try it you'll like it!
The Community Clothing Center is in need of one volunteer for the 2nd Thursday of each month from 3-5pm. This is a great shift for a parent and child or two friends!

Please contact Joan Alayne Stevens if you are able to join this great volunteer team effort.

Sunday, September 10

There is a lot happening once we return to 8 & 10am worship on Sunday, September 10. In addition to the Important Dates section to the left, here are the highlights of everything happening the first Sunday of our program year:

1. There will be two services: 8am is a simple, spoken, Rite I service.  10am is a Rite II service that offers music, choirs, nursery care, Sunday School (family worship the 2nd Sunday of every month), and coffee hour.

2. Any child in Grade 2-8 who would like to sing in the Jr. Choir, please meet in the choir pews at 11:30am for more information. The Jr. Choir sings at the 10am worship service on the second Sunday of the month, the 7pm Christmas Eve and 9:15am Easter worship service. They usually rehearse after worship from 11:30-Noon the Sundays they do not sing.

3. Sunday School registration during coffee hour. Registration is ongoing throughout the year in the classrooms if you are not able to sign up this Sunday.

4. Sunday School Teacher informational meeting at 11:30-1pm in the preK/K room.

5. Acolyte Refresher & Training in the church at noon for anyone grade 4 - adult who would like to serve during either service. Help is greatly needed at 8am and the more the merrier at 10am.  Pizza will be served at 1pm.

6. Theology Under Wraps for high school teens at Nadeau's Subs, 776 Mast Rd, Pinardville from 4-6pm. Come chat with Rev. Celeste and Shea Sennett.

Blessing of Life Ministries on Labor Day

Once again on the Sunday before Labor Day I invite you to bring in a symbol of your ministry to church for a blessing.  Your ministry may be what you do for a living, or it may be something else.  Your ministry is what you do for life. What do you do between Sundays that affirms and builds up the life that Jesus offers us in abundance? What object is a sign of that ministry?  Start to pray about that now, and bring your ministry sign to church on September 3rd.

Save The Date
Friday, September 29, 2017 7pm

Festive Evensong to celebrate our
150th Anniversary.

In honor of St. Matthew's Church approaching 150th Anniversary, each week there will be a piece of history shared.  Did you know...

The Annual Meeting Minutes from January 30, 1973, stressed that a vestryman should have faithful church attendance and on-time attendance at meetings, along with taking a major responsibility in participating in the annual canvass for pledges. The Sr. Warden also mentioned that, due to the likelihood of inclement weather in November, canvassing was planned for October instead.

Book Group Info

Need a late summer read? St. Matthew's book group will be meeting on Thursday Oct. 12 at 7pm in the Parish House, 7 N. Mast Rd. We will kick off the year reading Bishop Hirshfeld's new book, Without Shame or Fear: From Adam to Christ . A copy of the book will be available to borrow on the book table in the undercroft. Looking forward to seeing your there.  The Winter meeting will be on January 11, 2018 at 7pm. We will be reading Following Jesus in a Culture of Fear by Scott Bader-Saye

In case anyone is traveling north for the Labor Day weekend:

Search Team status:
They will be starting the interview process.
Search Team Prayer:  Loving God, giver of all good gifts, guide us throughout our time of transition.  Open our hearts and minds as we search for our new rector.  Empower each one of us to use our unique gifts in ministry, to share openly and honestly our thoughts, to respect the opinions of others, and to encourage humility, patience and joy.  Keep watch over the one you have chosen for us while you instill in us a vision of the Church's family; that, guided by your Holy Spirit, we will be united in love and joyfully accomplish our mission through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Pastoral Care Team Asks for Assistance

The pastoral care team at St. Matthew's is there to provide support to our fellow parishioners when they experience loss, sickness or any kind of trouble.  Recently, we've seen an above average need for help with meals as multiple St. Matthew's families are dealing with medical issues.

In order to help meet this increased need, we'd like to see if there are any other parishioners that would be willing to help out with meals.  We're not looking for a big commitment.  In general, we are looking for people to:

- Provide one dinner every other week (at most).
- Deliver the dinner (probably frozen) to the freezer in the undercroft for pickup.

If you are willing to help out, respond "YES" to this email.  Kelly will prove your contact information to the pastoral care team and you will then be contacted regarding signup. If you have questions, please contact Leo Steffens (LeoSteffens@usa.net).

Thank you very much and God bless!
