Interim Rector's Notes - August 10, 2017
One of the Five Practices of the Episcopal Church of New Hampshire is "We splash water."  Come and get your feet wet this Sunday! We'll hear how Jesus walked on water and inspired his disciple Peter to try to do the same.  And, through the waters of Baptism, we'll welcome a brand new disciple, Koen McKahan. Come and consider what these two events have in common.
          "See you in church,"

Pastoral Care Team Asks for Assistance
The pastoral care team at St. Matthew's is there to provide support to our fellow parishioners when they experience loss, sickness or any kind of trouble.  Recently, we've seen an above average need for help with meals as multiple St. Matthew's families are dealing with medical issues.
In order to help meet this increased need, we'd like to see if there are any other parishioners that would be willing to help out with meals.  We're not looking for a big commitment.  In general, we are looking for people to:
- Provide one dinner every other week (at most).
- Deliver the dinner (probably frozen) to the freezer in the undercroft for pickup.
If you are willing to help out, respond "YES" to this email.  Kelly will prove your contact information to the pastoral care team and you will then be contacted regarding signup. If you have questions, please contact Leo Steffens (
Thank you very much and God bless!

The Immigrant/Refugee Experience
Tuesday, August 15 at 6:00 pm

Join the Goffstown Public Library for a documentary and discussion tackling the issues of belonging and citizenship.

Uprooted: Heartache and Hope in New Hampshire is a 30 minute documentary following the story of 5 refugees who were resettled in NH. Produced by the Center for the Humanities at the University of New Hampshire, the film explores what it means to be a refugee and how it feels to make a new life in a strange place.

A Q&A session will immediately follow the film. Guest speakers Tilak Niroula and Suraj Budathoki, recipients of the Union Leader's 40 Under 40 Award, will share their experiences as Bhutanese refugees who now make their home in this state.

We hope you'll join us for a day of inter-generational proactive engagement as we bring together Granite Staters from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds for a frank and deep dialogue about creating a more equitable New Hampshire.
How do we address racial inequities and engage in a dialogue that includes the leadership voices of everyone?  Developing genuine respect and appreciation for the contributions of our diverse community entails more than just tolerance. It requires the creation of systems, policies and programs that support racial equity and fairness so that everyone can prosper.
Now is the time to talk about what we want our communities and state to be - and what it means to be truly welcoming, inclusive and equitable for everyone in the Granite State.

October 16, 2017, 8:30am-5pm at the Grappone Center, Concord.  The Symposium is free of charge - a continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Blessings of Life Ministries on Labor Day
Once again on the Sunday before Labor Day I invite you to bring in a symbol of your ministry to church for a blessing.  Your ministry may be what you do for a living, or it may be something else.  Your ministry is what you do for life. What do you do between Sundays that affirms and builds up the life that Jesus offers us in abundance? What object is a sign of that ministry?  Start to pray about that now, and bring your ministry sign to church on September 3rd.

Save The Date
Friday, September 29, 2017 7pm
Festive Evensong to celebrate our
150th Anniversary.

In honor of St. Matthew's Church approaching 150th Anniversary, each week there will be a piece of history shared.  Did you know...
The Community Clothing Center opened on Saturday, 03/28/2009 under the direction of Fr. Bill Exner and St. Matthew's Episcopal Church as part of its Outreach ministry. Hillside United Methodist Church donated clothing, shelving and racks from the Vestree, which had closed due to rising fuel costs in 2008. Amy Poisson was appointed director of the center, managing a group of more than 30 volunteers, as well as youth from Goffstown VolunTEENS.

In case anyone is traveling north for the Labor Day weekend:
